Acrobat DC Pro is in sore need of a major overhaul and update. Many of the other creative cloud suite apps are 64bit, multithreaded and have been for years. Also Acrobat Pro is NOT multi-threaded, as what I can tell. Also, it has never been in the loop for yearly updates timed with the other Adobe apps and has had its own independent update path, outside of the CS suite apps. Sometimes YEARS pass before any major updates. Sadly, the brand new 2022 CC updates came out and nearly all the apps got refreshed and updated to version 2022, EXCEPT Acrobat Pro. Yet another year gone with no update, especially to 64bit multi-threaded. This needs to stop! Anyway, several features are very slow and it makes working in Acrobat a huge and frustrating pain.

1)Make Acrobat Pro 64bit -- Its 2022 now and Acrobat is still 32 bits?!?!? Umm, hello? Windows has been 64bit since like windows 7, over 12 years ago? So, say hello to never accessing more than 4 gigs of memory, if needed. I work with HUGE pdfs 300+megs in size and I need several of them open at a time. These are PDFs that are several hundred-page magazines and catalogs that are full page, full color scans at 300 dpi or higher sometimes with page sizes 11x17. I have a 12 core 24thread system (Dual hex-core Xeon’s) running at 3.4Ghz with 96 gigs of memory and a GTX 1080Ti with 11gigs ram and Windows 10. Opening, re-arranging pages, cropping pages, doing OCR, is painfully slow, slow screen renders and slow page loads, slow thumbnail views, slow everything. I can tell Acrobat is struggling because of 32 bit bottlenecks and single-threaded functions with no GPU support. Please fix this mess of sluggishness with huge scanned files. Im tired of Click, wait, Click wait. It should be click, DONE, click, DONE.

2)Make Acrobat Pro MULTI-THREADED!! Please fix the 25+ year OLD single threaded code in Acrobat!!! I am constantly wasting time, WAITING and WAITING and WAITING for Acrobat to do its work. Click, wait. Click, Wait, Click, wait. With 12 processors and 24 threads, Acrobat only using 5% of my overall CPU when doing complex tasks? What the heck? I continually need to OCR huge scanned documents and want the OCR as selectable text on top of the original graphic. This takes horsepower and time. When OCRing, acrobat is totally locked up with a slow slider graph indicating its progress of “Optimizing” for hours and hours on ONE file. Ugh. I continually have to wait hours and hours for it to OCR just a 200 page document with each page tabloid sized at 600dpi. Its totally locked up and I cant use the app for anything else. This is ridiculous. AND during this time, its ONLY using a max of 5% of my 12 CPUs for hours? What? Why can’t it max out my 12 cores, 24 threads for like 10 minutes and get the OCR job done much quicker? If Acrobat was multi-threaded, I could open a huge document, do the settings and tell it to OCR on 1 or 2 of my 12 CPUs, THEN I could open another document and tell it to do the same thing, THEN I could open another document and work with it as the other 2, OCR. And if It used/need 36Gig out of my 96gigs of ram to do this, great!! No, problem. (like what After Effects uses) Can you make this possible? Also, make every feature multi-threaded. When in “organizing pages” area, EVERY time I scroll a tid bit, ALL the thumbnails have to redraw/reload? WTF? Can I please scroll down and then back up without ALL the thumbnails disappearing to whit boxes and then redrawing? And it takes 5 seconds for EACH thumbnail to draw AND it does it sequentially, NOT concurrently. So when 20 page thumnails are on the screen, its like 2 minutes to load? What the??? Sigh. This alone, is hair pulling frustrating. This to me is obvious proof of a very poorly coded 20+ year old single threaded routine that is unoptimized for todays multicore multithreaded CPUs and supercomputers-on-a-card-GPUs. Ever heard of cacheing images? Or multithreaded intelligent code that seeks ahead of the current viewed screen and continues to concurrently (not sequentially) render/load all page images so they are cached and display instantly when scrolled? Same thing for the page image thumbnails on the left, when scrolling. Please preload them and KEEP them cached, not having to wait for it to redraw/reload each time you scroll. Also same for cropping pages. EVERY time you click to draw a crop box, scroll, or click on the page to do anything, it has to reload/refresh it, turning the screen white and then slowly over 5 seconds, load in each page again, simply because it’s a 300 or 600 dpi scanned image. And if you have it zoomed out and are seeing 6 pages on the screen at a time, heaven forbid. 30 seconds to load them up, sequentially; waiting and waiting. So frustratingly slow. Ugh. Imagine in a web browser, scrolling down a webpage that has 40 images on it and some text inbetween, and the browser instantly forgets each image when it disappears off the screen and no matter which direction you scroll, you get a white image box and have to wait 5 seconds for that 1 image to load, then 5 seconds for next image and so forth, every time, even if 1 pixel of image goes off screen. I wonder how many people would be happy with that performance. That’s like what the world wide web was back when it started in 1993, getting it over a blazing fast 14.4k modem.
Basic Things that need multi-threaded, so they run in the background (you got this figured out in Illustrator and others, why not Acrobat?)
File opening, file saving, File exporting, or file converting. Multithread handling of large image/scanned documents, maybe even to internally in memory, split up the file to be able to have several sections or pages of it handled, concurrently faster; Also multithread the scrolling in “optimize pages” section, scrolling in the left side page thumbnails, multithreaded OCRing, multithreaded ability to work on multiple open documents concurently allowing several documents to be processing in background. And more…
3) Upgrade the OCR engine. I’m convinced the OCR engine in Acrobat has ever been updated since the separate 1999 OCR program of “Acrobat Capture” was integrated into Acrobat Pro. Huge sections of my magazines are not OCRed. Especially color text on color photographs, inverted text color, white on black or any color on color text, Large fonts, headings, headers, text in fonts other than simple serif or times fonts are not recognized, text spanning multiple pages is ignored, etc. Well, basically the only text that is OCRed, is simple black text on white backgrounds that is easy to read, which is the OCR of 20 years ago. AND, even that comes through with tons of mistakes and maybe 90% accurate at best. ?? Ridiculous. Anything more complicated is skipped. I’m considering moving to Omnipage Pro to do the OCRing until Acrobat is fixed. Come on, Please upgrade the OCR engine and make it CUDA compatible so my 1000+ cores of the graphics card can compute on it. If there are dozens of cores and threads to use on a system with gigs of memory, USE THEM. Sitting, waiting for hours, sometimes, overnight, to complete a single OCR task that appears to be a CPU intensive process, but it’s single threaded and only using 5% of my overall CPUs!?!? Sigh. (eyes rolling)

4) Make Acrobat Pro GPU compatible for as many relevant functions as possible. I don’t know what is able to be used/done with CUDA compatibility or even OpenGL compatibility but please integrate it everywhere possible, (OCRing would be nice) Screen redraws/refreshes, page loads, scrolling, zooming manipulating 200 page large scanned documents all is SO SLOW!!! Forced page reloads just for scrolling, is silly. Render them once and then CACHE them. I got 96 gigs of real memory, use it, if its siting there doing nothing. I got 1000+ GPU cores on my nvidia GPU, sitting there, doing nothing. And 12 cores, 24 threads sitting there idle. Use them, not just one thread at a time, sequentially.

One last thing, in an open document, the tab at the top that displays the file name, PLEASE allow it to have adjustable width so it displays the full file name (or make this an option that can be turned on or off). It is very annoying now because any file name longer than 15 characters is truncated in the tab's display. You have this feature in all other adobe apps, why not Acrobat?
Side note: It appears that Acrobat has never been a part of the Creative Cloud world. Almost like there is a separate team that kinda works on it off and on squireled away somewhere. It doen't have the same look, feel, graphic style, window style or layout of any of the other major Adobe apps, it never is include to be updated on your bi-annual update releases of spring and fall, and its been years since any major updates on it. What's going on with Acrobat Pro? Why has it never been apart of the CS or CC world? But always as something separate, and left out like an after thought or an Obfuscated project and/or team of people behind it.

Anyway, I do love Adobe apps and use many of them on a daily basis BUT is there any hope of actually brining Acrobat Pro into the 21st century of being a modern 64bit/multi-threaded app for windows and mac?
